Give everything to God
“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”
Psalms 55:22
Giving everything to God isn’t as easy as it sounds.
I mean how hard can it be to give your pain to God, glory to God, money, to God, your life to God?
At face value, it’s pretty easy to say, Yep, I give everything in my life to you God!
When we dig deeper though we find that it’s harder to do than we might think.
Think back to the last time you got angry. How long did you harbor those feelings? Was it a few minutes, overnight, a week, a month, or years?
What happened when you finally came to your senses and gave your anger to God. You asked him to help you forgive whatever happened so you could move on?
When was the last time you got your paycheck or even a little extra cash, and asked God to give you guidance on what to do with the money?
One thing that I have started practicing recently is with every check that comes in I thank God for the blessing and ask that he guides my decisions with these finances to have the money go where he needs it most.
That didn’t come easy.
In fact, when I was younger, maybe only a couple of days, I would pray and give all of my finances to God, then I would take them right back with every check that came in.
I never truly gave it to God.
You might not know this about us but when I was younger about 10 years ago, we were in major financial trouble. We had racked up massive amounts of credit card debt. (Judge all you want, we don’t care. Anymore.)
My wonderful wife was tracking the finances and doing her best to stay on top of it all.
Then one day we prayed for God’s guidance to help us get back on the right track with our entire lives. (not just financially, but with our kids, spiritually, food, everything. We didn’t hold anything back.)
It was almost immediately we both saw a HUGE difference.
I was cursing like a sailor and drinking too much. While Jenna had massive stress about finances and other things.
I remember it like it was this morning.
We sat on the bed, faced each other, held hands, and prayed. As we prayed it brought tears to my eyes. When we finished giving everything to God. we both had the exact same though at the same time. We need to do this more often.
For the next week, we prayed together every night. Then we changed it to once a week. We still pray together as much as possible.
Here is what happened.
I was encouraged to take over the finances because I was the one spending the most money. Jenna was encouraged to help our family get healthier among other things.
We listened to God.
Yes, we still failed to hear him and do what he told us to do. Much like I still do today at times.
This is what happened though. Within 12 months of us praying, God brought us completely out of credit card debt. There is no way it would have happened if we didn’t involve him though.
Of course, we changed how we were living and took massive action following his lead.
We started listening to him as much as possible.
The day after we prayed, I stopped cursing altogether. I went from having every other word being a curse word to it shocked me when I cursed.
In fact, one of my coworkers said, Man what happened to you? You used to curse like a sailor, now I never hear it!
Jenna is no longer stressed about our finances. Her mood elevated and our relationship became stronger.
This is one example of how giving it to God can change your life.
It changed ours.
Today we want to encourage you to pray with your partner, parents, siblings, friends, and whoever you are around.
Give your entire life to God and everything in it.
This was the prayer we prayed that night in our bed holding hands. Will you pray with us?
Prayer
God, we want to take a few moments to thank you. Thank you for everything that you have given to us. We know that we don’t deserve any of it. God, you have kept us afloat for so long and we are grateful for that. But God we are tired, worn out, and need your help. Will you help us? God, we need help giving you everything in our lives. We want you to take control of our actions, attitudes, emotions, finances, possessions, EVERYTHING.
God, when you designed us it was to lean on you hard, but here lately we have been trying to do it all on our own. And failing miserably if we might say so. God, we want you to be our reason for living. So God when you speak we will listen, just teach us how to listen. When you show us we will see you, just open our eyes. God when you touch our lives we will feel you, just allows us to know you are here.
God, you are everything to us and we want to give everything to you. Especially our relationships in the world. God, you are amazing and we know that. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. God, we are yours and we want to give everything to you. Thank you for everything.
Amen
