Putting God First
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”
Matthew 13:44-46
Greetings,
In the tapestry of life, there exists an intricate pattern woven with choices, priorities, and pursuits. Among these threads, one shines with unparalleled brilliance the act of putting God first. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shares two parables that unveil the profound significance of making God our utmost treasure.
The Hidden Treasure in the Field
Imagine stumbling upon a field, seemingly ordinary, yet concealing a treasure of unimaginable worth. The man in this parable recognized the treasure’s value, and in his joy, he sold everything he had to purchase that field. In this simple story, Jesus reveals a profound truth: The kingdom of heaven is like that hidden treasure.
When we put God first, we discover a treasure beyond measure. It’s a treasure of divine love, grace, and eternal life. It’s the assurance of God’s presence in our lives, guiding us through every season. Just as the man joyfully gave up everything to possess the hidden treasure, prioritizing God brings immeasurable joy and fulfillment.
The Priceless Pearl
The second parable introduces us to a merchant in search of fine pearls. His journey culminates when he discovers a single pearl of exceptional value. Without hesitation, he sells all his possessions to acquire this priceless pearl. This pearl symbolizes the kingdom of heaven, a treasure so invaluable that it warrants the surrender of all worldly pursuits.
Putting God first is like recognizing the unmatched worth of this pearl. It’s a conscious decision to relinquish anything that stands between us and God’s kingdom. In this choice, we find a life of purpose, peace, and eternal significance.
Putting God First: A Transformative Choice
These parables illustrate that putting God first is not a causal decision but a transformative one. It’s an acknowledgment that God’s presence and kingdom are the ultimate treasures. In our pursuit of success, wealth, and earthly desires, we may overlook the treasure hidden in God’s kingdom.
To put God first means recognizing that He is the source of all blessings and the guide through life’s labyrinth. It involves prioritizing prayer, worship, and spiritual growth. It’s choosing love, kindness, and forgiveness over selfishness and resentment.
The Challenge and the Reward
Putting God first is not without its challenges. It may require sacrificing personal ambitions, letting go of material possessions, and confronting the distractions that vie for our attention. Yet, the reward is immeasurable, a life deeply enriched with divine purpose, inner peace, and boundless love.
As we reflect on these parables, let’s consider what we treasure most. Are we willing to joyfully surrender all that hinders our relationship with God? Can we recognize the matchless value of His kingdom and prioritize it above all else?
Prayer: Choosing God First
Let’s close in prayer, reaffirming our commitment to put God first:
